13 FAD DIETS TO IGNORE

13 Fad Diets To Ignore

FAD DIET

Dubious diets

From the impractical to the downright dangerous, these diets aren’t your best choice for losing weight.

Every day it seems a new diet is ready to make weight loss faster and easier than ever before. Or at least they say they are. “Most fad diets go something like this: Take a few foods, give them ‘magic’ power, and set a plan to convince people that eating this way and only this way will promote weight loss,” says Alexandra Caspero, RD, a nutritionist based in Sacramento, Calif. The following diets might spur short-term weight loss, but many are difficult to follow, have arbitrary rules, and a few could put your health in danger.

The raw food diet

Any weight-loss expert would agree that boosting your veggie and fruit intake while reducing the amount of junk you eat is a safe and effective way to lose weight, but this diet bans foods that have been cooked or processed in any way. Why? Raw foodies say cooking destroys nutrients. Though it’s true that cooking produce can sometimes reduce nutrient levels, cooked veggies still pack plenty of fiber, vitamins, and minerals, and in some instances cooking actually enhances nutrients while also killing bacteria. The biggest issue with this extreme form of veganism? Food prep—it’s totally impractical, says Christopher N. Ochner, PhD, director of research development and administration at the Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center. Raw foodies spend hours upon hours juicing, blending, dehydrating, sprouting, germinating, cutting, chopping, and rehydrating.

The blood-type diet

Developed by naturopathic physician Peter D’Adamo, the Blood Type Diet is based on the notion that the foods you eat react chemically with your blood type. For example, on the diet, those with type O blood are to eat lean meats, vegetables, and fruits, and avoid wheat and dairy. Meanwhile, type A dieters go vegetarian, and those with type B blood are supposed to avoid chicken, corn, wheat, tomatoes, peanuts, and sesame seeds. However, there’s no scientific proof that your blood type affects weight loss. And depending on your blood type, the diet can be extremely restrictive.

The werewolf diet

Also called the lunar diet, this one is simply fasting according to the lunar calendar. Its quick-fix version involves a day of fasting allowing only water and juice during a full or new moon—and supposedly losing up to six pounds in water weight in a single day. The extended version starts with that daylong fast and continues with specific eating plans for each phase of the moon. While you’ll lose some weight from not eating, it has nothing to do with the moon, and it will come right back, Ochner says.

Cookie diets

Dr. Siegal’s Cookie Diet, The Hollywood Cookie Diet, and the Smart for Life Cookie Diet all promise that eating cookies will help you drop pounds. Of course, you don’t get to chow down chocolate-chip cookies—you eat about 500 to 600 calories a day from high-protein and high-fiber weight-loss cookies (one cookie company even makes the cookies from egg and milk protein) for breakfast, lunch, and any snacks. Then you eat a normal dinner, for a total of 1,000 to 1,200 calories a day. If you stick to the diet, you will likely lose some weight, but by depriving yourself all day, you set yourself up for bingeing come dinnertime, Ochner says.

The five-bite diet

Eat whatever you want—but only five bites of it. On this diet, developed by obesity doctor Alwin Lewis, MD, you skip breakfast and eat only five bites of food for lunch and five more for dinner. “I’m OK with the idea of eating whatever you want in smaller portions, but you need to round out the rest of your eating with nutrient-dense foods to give your body the fuel it needs,” Caspero says. “On this diet, even if you take giant bites of heavily caloric food, you’re still barely consuming 900 to 1,000 calories a day.”

The Master Cleanse/lemonade diet

This diet has been around for decades, and there are a ton of variations. Pretty much all involve subsisting for days on only lemon juice, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper mixed in water. “You are essentially just drinking diuretics,” Ochner says. “You’ll shed mostly water weight.” Once you start eating solid foods again, you will gain all the weight back. Common side effects include fatigue, nausea, dizziness, and dehydration. Plus, on an extremely low-calorie diet like this one, you are going to lose muscle, exactly the kind of weight you don’t want to lose, Caspero says.

The baby food diet

If a baby can grow up eating the mushy stuff, eating some definitely won’t hurt you, but guess what: You aren’t a baby. Dieters replace breakfast and lunch with about 14 jars of baby food (most baby food jars contain 20 and 100 calories apiece), and then they eat a low-calorie dinner. It’s easy to get too few calories for your body to run its best, Ochner says. Besides, who really wants to take jars of baby food to work each day?

The cabbage soup diet

The grandmother of all fad diets, the bulk of this plan is fat-free cabbage soup, eaten two to three times a day for a week along with other low-calorie foods such as bananas and skim milk. In the short term, it does yield weight loss. “It works because you are eating a low-calorie diet full of fiber and water to help aid in fullness,” Caspero says. “But it’s just a quick fix diet. It can also promote bloating and gas from all the cabbage, and is lacking in protein, which is needed to preserve lean body mass. While I am a fan of nutrient-dense, low calorie foods for weight loss, it should be balanced with other foods such as fruits, carbohydrates, healthy fats, and lean protein.”

The grapefruit diet

We are all for including produce at every meal, but the various versions of this 80-year-old fad diet instruct dieters to focus all of their meals on grapefruit or grapefruit juice, claiming that the fruit contains fat-busting enzymes that will help dieters lose 10-plus pounds in 12 days. “In reality, any time you are following a very-low calorie diet you will lose weight,” Caspero says. And this diet definitely hits that, limiting dieters to 800 to 1,000 calories a day. Some iterations also prohibit eating extremely hot or extremely cold foods, preparing foods in aluminum pans, and requires dieters to space “protein meals” and “starch meals” at least four hours apart.

The Sleeping Beauty diet

If you’re asleep, you’re not eating. Rumored to have been followed by Elvis Presley, this diet takes that simple fact to the extreme, encouraging people to use sedatives to stay asleep for days on end. But sleeping the days away not only starves the body and causes muscle deterioration from a lack of movement, but actually risks death: “Every time you go under, there’s a risk,” Ochner says. “Sure, you might wake up 2 pounds lighter, but you might not wake up at all.”

The HCG diet

This edge-of-starvation diet limits you to about 500 calories a day while taking human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), a hormone that proponents tout as a powerful appetite suppressant. However, there’s no evidence that HCG does more than act as a placebo, Ochner says. Yes, you’ll lose weight, but only due to the extreme calorie restriction. Though a health care provider may legally give you HCG injections, they’re typically used to treat fertility issues in women and the FDA has not approved them for weight loss. As for over-the-counter homeopathic products that supposedly contain HCG? Those are illegal.

The tapeworm diet

“You don’t need a doctor to tell you that ingesting a tapeworm is a bad idea,” Ochner says. But apparently, some people do. This weight-loss tactic has been around for decades, preying on especially desperate dieters. Here’s how it goes: Ingest tapeworm eggs, let the tapeworm eat the food you consume once it gets to your intestines, and then, when you lose enough weight, get a doctor to prescribe you an anti-worm medication. But some tapeworm eggs can migrate to various parts of your body or cause other potentially life-threatening problems. Freaked out yet? Good.

The cotton ball diet

Consuming cotton balls soaked in orange juice—a diet technique may have been born on YouTube, in chat rooms, and on Facebook—is an incredibly dangerous way to suppress your appetite. “This makes my eating-disorder therapy head spin,” Caspero says. Not only does consuming cotton balls in place of food deprive the body of nutrients, eating anything that isn’t actually food can cause blockages in your intestines. What’s more, most cotton balls aren’t even made of cotton—they’re composed of bleached, synthetic fibers.

Women’s Health – Must Haves For Fast Weight Loss

If you’re looking to lose weight and have tried everything it’s actually important and helpful to know which foods that burn fat and aid in weight loss! No need to starve yourself or go on a strict diet, although counting calories does help! But there are certain foods that burn fat and they will be helpful to you when trying to lose weight. Below are some of the best Weight Loss Tips and Eatables you should be chowing down in order to maintain or get started on weight loss!

  • Speed up the Breakdown of Fat

Here are two great foods that burn fat and they are salmon and tuna! These particular fish are loaded with proteins and fatty acids, two of the essentials our body needs to speed up the breakdown of fat! Try getting 1-2 servings in at least 3 times a week, and have some veggies on the side for a whole meal.

  • Vitamin B12

Eggs are one of my favorite foods, and it was only recently that I learned how amazing they are in burning fat and aiding in weight loss! Chock full of vitamin B12, eggs will break down body fat faster than you can blink! Well, maybe not that fast, but they do their job and do it effectively. Aim for 3-4 servings per week.

  • A Healthy Way To Boost Your Weight Loss, Energy Level and Bodily Functions

We all know that fresh fruits and veggies are healthy for us, but how many of us actually eat them? Opening a can or a frozen bag is easier than washing, peeling, storing, and prepping fresh produce. However, the benefits are entirely worth it! If you get 3-5 servings of fresh fruits and veggies per day, you will notice an over-all difference in your weight loss, hair and skin appearance, as well as your energy levels and bodily functions!

  • Enhance Your Metabolism

Raw cacao is a fabulous weight loss aid. Raw cacao powder or nibs are nothing more than raw chocolate at its finest. Raw cacao is a great energy aid and contains the crucial minerals zinc, iron and magnesium, which all enhance your metabolism, aid in metabolizing carbohydrates, and these nutrients give you energy. Raw cacao is also great for halting your appetite and you only need an ounce a day to make a difference. This is your free chance to eat chocolate, so take it ladies!

  • Detoxify Your Body

Kale is a true superfood and not just because it’s green! Kale is one of the best leafy greens you can eat to burn fat because it contains rich amounts of chlorophyll, magnesium and iron. Kale also contains more protein per ounce than steak! Chlorophyll is the pigment that gives kale its green hue, and detoxifies the body, helping to wash out wastes that can cause fat storage. It also curbs cravings. If you think you don’t like kale, try massaging it with your hands with a teeny bit of melted coconut oil, some nutritional yeast and a dash of Himilayan sea salt and black pepper. This dish tastes absolutely amazing and creamy, and helps you burn fat as a bonus!

  • Omega 3 Fatty Acids

Hemp seeds are one of my favorite foods and they are great to burn fat fast! Hemp seeds are wonderful for your metabolism because they are a complete source of protein. They are also high in Omega 3 fatty acids which aid in fat burning, depression prevention, and they increase your metabolism and energy production. Sprinkle these sweet and nutty little raw seeds on a salad, some yogurt, some oatmeal or your smoothie and burn fat the tasty way!

  • Chia Seeds

Chia seeds are one of my favorite filling foods. Just three tablespoon soaked in a little almond milk gels up into this delicious pudding like texture. I like to add a little stevia and cinnamon to my chia pudding and it takes away all those nasty cravings. Chia seeds swell up in your stomach, yet most of their calories come from healthy fats, and their carbohydrates come completely from fiber. This means they don’t just enhance your metabolism, but they also aid in removing toxins from your body. Soak 3 tbsp. chia seeds with ½ cup almond milk or coconut milk. Add a teeny bit of sweetener of your choice such as stevia, and a little cinnamon or even cocoa powder and mix it up. Then, just let it soak overnight! You can also add chia seeds to smoothies, salads, or basically any dish you want.

  • Must Have For Weight Loss

Cinnamon is a powerful little spice that packs a punch. Full of health benefits, cinnamon is something every woman who is trying to lose weight should have in her pantry! Just ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon helps metabolize sugars 20 times faster than before! Cinnamon also lowers your body’s blood sugar level overall.

  • Brazil Nuts

Brazil nuts are rich in the nutrient selenium, which helps your body use carbohdyrates for energy instead of fat storage. Selenium is an important mineral that also helps to curb your appetite. Just one single Brazil nut has over 100% of your daily selenium requirements, so pop one before your next workout and consider yourself good to go!

  • Soy Protein

Here is a food item that some of us don’t have a taste for, but it will aid you greatly in your weight-loss journey. Tofu is an excellent source of soy protein, so it burns fat quickly and in large amounts. It’s a great pick for vegetarians, or if you just want to mix it up a bit!

  • Burn Twice The Amount Of Calories

If you have a mouth for spicy foods, try having a cayenne pepper or two! These little peppers are helpful in weight loss because they burn twice the amount of calories that other peppers do, and the effect lasts for hours. If you don’t like cayenne, you can try jalapeno or some other spicy peppers for great results.

  • Fiber-Rich Foods

We all need a little fiber in our diet, and if you’re trying to lose weight that’s no exception! Fiber-rich foods help your body to flush out and cleanse the bloodstream, as well as get rid of junk your body has been holding back. Whole grains are a good source of fiber, so try to get 4-5 servings a week.

Did you know your body actually NEEDS some fats? There are only a few good fats, one of them being monounsaturated fats. Extra virgin olive oil is packed with these fats, so to keep your diet balanced, and aid in burning body fat, add a few teaspoons of EVOO to your diet each week!
Coconut is a great food to eat if you’re looking to drop weight. Coconut is rich in MCT fats, which are special fats that aid in liver function, where your fat burning starts. Your liver is responsible for triggering fat burn, but it can’t do so if it is filled with toxins we encounter everyday. Coconut’s antiviral properties help enhance your liver health to aid in detoxification. The fats in coconut are used immediately for enzyme production and metabolism, making it great to consume if you workout. Coconut oil is best to cook with, and shredded unsweetened coconut is great to add to yogurt, oatmeal or homemade energy bars. Go with 2 tbsp. per day for the best amount.

Lemons are my favorite addition to any food, or rather lemon juice, that is. Lemon juice is the best way to alkalize your body in literally two seconds with just a squeeze of lemon juice. It is rich in Vitamin C, which automatically aids in fat burning, and it detoxifies the liver, where fat burning starts. Lemon also increases the efficiency of your digestion, which can help if you’re feeling slugglsh, which may stall weight loss too.

Something that is vital to remember as you are trying to lose weight is how important it is to remain healthy about your eating habits. Losing weight is always encouraging, but don’t take desperate measures. Feed your body healthy, fat-burning foods and be nutritious!

14 Home Remedies To Make You Look Younger

14 Home Remedies To MakeYou Look Younger!

How old are you really? See how your daily habits affect your true age—and how to knock off years, starting today. The answer is more complicated than counting the number of candles you blew out on your last birthday cake. Your daily habits can either add or subtract years from your life—like how much you exercise, or how stressed you allow yourself to be. Read on for 14 things you can start doing today to live a longer, healthier life.

Lose Weight

Being obese increases the risk of diabetes, cancer and heart disease, possibly shaving up to 12 years off your life, per an analysis in the journal Obesity. But being too thin can hike your risk of osteoporosis and poor immune function. So aim to stay at a weight that’s healthy for you.

Cap your drinks

Regularly exceeding one drink a day or three in one sitting can damage organs, weaken the immune system and increase the risk of some cancers.

Ease your stress

Chronic stress makes us feel old—and actually ages us: In a 2012 study, Austrian researchers found that work-related tension harms DNA in our cells, speeding up the shortening of telomeres—which protect the ends of our chromosomes and which may indicate our life expectancy. Of course, it’s impossible to completely obliterate stress. “What’s important is how you manage it,” says Thomas Perls, MD, associate professor at Boston University school of Medicine and creator of the Living to 100 Life Expectancy Calculator. Practice yoga, pray, meditate, relax in the shower or do whatever else chills you out.

Keep learning

Having more education lengthens your life span, according to a study in the journal Health Affairs, for a number of reasons. Extra schooling may help you become better informed about how to live a healthy life. And educated folks, as a group, have a higher income, which means greater access to good health care and insurance.

Connect

More and more research points to the value of having friends, and not just on Facebook. An Oxford University study found that being married makes you less likely to die of heart disease, which researchers suggest may be due to partners encouraging the other to seek early medical treatment. Same goes for friendships: Australian research showed that people with the most buddies lived 22 percent longer than those with the smallest circle. “Having positive, meaningful, intimate relationships is critical to most people’s well-being,” says Linda Fried, MD, dean of Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health.

Extend a hand

Volunteering is linked to a lower risk of death, a University of Michigan study suggests. But you don’t have to log hours at a soup kitchen: Simply helping friends and family—say, by tutoring your niece or assisting your neighbor with her groceries—lowers blood pressure, according to researchers at the University of Tennessee and Johns Hopkins University.

Work out often

Exercising regularly—ideally at least three days of cardio and two days of strength training a week—may help slow the aging process, Canadian doctors reported. “Being physically active is like keeping the car engine tuned,” Dr. Fried says. “Even if there’s decline with age, it’s less severe.” You were never an athlete? Don’t worry: Starting to work out now can reduce your likelihood of becoming ill going forward, a 2014 study suggests.

Reconsider your protein

A diet rich in processed meat—including hot dogs, sausage, cured bacon and cured deli meats—has been linked to a higher risk of heart disease, diabetes and colon cancer. Limit your intake as much as possible.

Give up smoking

Lighting up increases your risk of not only lung cancer but also heart disease and cancer of almost every other organ. “Just one cigarette a day can take 15 years off your life,” Dr. Perls says. Though you won’t instantly revert to pre-smoking health, kicking butts will cut your added cardiovascular risk in half after a year and to that of a nonsmoker after 15.

Enjoy your joe

Good news for java lovers: Research indicates that drinking coffee regularly may protect against diabetes, cirrhosis and liver cancer. And Harvard research suggests that drinking 3 1/2 cups a day may lower risk of heart disease. Read more about the health benefits of coffee.

Sleep better

For evidence that you can—and should—make slumber a priority, look no further than a 2013 study from the University of Surrey in England, which compared a group who got less than six hours of sleep a night with a group who got 8 1/2 hours. After just one week, snoozing less had altered the expression of 711 genes, including ones involved in metabolism, inflammation and immunity, which may raise the risk of conditions from heart disease to obesity.

Have More Sex

The feel-good rush you get from it helps you fight stress and depression, jolt the immune system and lower blood pressure.

Go Mediterranean

In a 2013 Annals of Internal Medicine study, women who followed a Mediterranean-style diet were 40 percent more likely to live past 70 without major chronic illness than those with less healthy diets. Eat lots of veggies, fruit, fish and whole grains, and avoid simple carbs, such as pasta and sugar (“age accelerators,” Dr. Perls calls them). Try these Mediterranean diet recipes.

Know your history

Have one or more relatives who lived into their 90s? You may be genetically blessed. But that doesn’t mean you should quit the gym and live on doughnuts. “Before you get to extreme ages, healthy lifestyle is more critical than genes,” Dr. Perls says. So thank your ancestors, but stick to vegetables and cardio as life insurance.

Home Remedies for an Earache

Home Remedies for an Earache

Summer is coming to an end and Fall is approaching fast, the season for nice chilly weather and the beautiful changing colors of the leaves. It’s definitely one of my favorite seasons. Like Winter, it comes with the coughs and sniffles which can often lead to ear pain and ear infections. Earaches can result from a variety of causes such as loud sounds, an ear infection, wax in the ear, blockage in the nasal passage, physical damage to the inside of the ear, an increase in air pressure and even fluid buildup and of course the common cold. Earaches occur more commonly among small children than adults. Thankfully, most ear infections get better without treatment and can be taken car of easily at home with natural home remedies. Earaches can be pretty painful and uncomfortable, so I’ve put together a list of some of the best home remedies for earaches, to help soothe aching ears.

5. Garlic

Garlic is very effective for relieving earaches and can be used in a number of ways. Garlic oil (which is simply garlic infused into olive oil) can be warmed and used in the ear as ear drops. The garlic oil can also be rubbed around the ear itself and used along the side of the neck for the lymphatic drainage massage.

Garlic contains powerful aromatic compounds that have an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory action. Garlic is actually quicker and more powerful at fighting ear infections than pharmaceutical antibiotics. The antiseptic compounds will be absorbed through the skin and the eardrum into the inner ear and surrounding tissues, fighting infection and reducing inflammation at the same time.

6. Onions

One of the remedies I’ve found that usually relieves earache pain very rapidly is onions. As with the garlic, there are a number of ways the onion can be used. Start by steaming or baking an onion with the skin on until it is soft. Keeping the skin on helps to hold the onion juices inside. Crush some of the cooked onion in a bowl to press out some of the juice of the onion. (If necessary, add a small amount of water to extract some of the juice.) Using an eye or ear dropper, place some of the warm juice in the ear. Usually, this relieves the pain in a matter of minutes.

An alternative method is to cut the cooked onion in half and place the cut surface against the outside of the ear and hold it there for 5-20 minutes. This has also proven highly effective in easing the pain. Make certain the onion has cooled enough that it’s warm, but not hot enough to burn the skin.

7. Cinnamon Oil

If you don’t have onions or garlic handy, then you probably have some cinnamon in your spice cabinet. Sprinkle a little cinnamon into some olive oil (or another vegetable oil if you don’t have any olive oil, but olive oil is best). Heat the oil over the stove at a low temperature. Simply put the olive oil and cinnamon in a tablespoon, hold it with a hot pad and heat the spoon over the stove. When the oil is hot, remove it from the stove and let it cool to body temperature. Strain it through a fine cloth and use the oil as ear drops

8. Essential Oil Ear Ache Rub

Lavender, cajuput, tea tree and thyme are all very effective for earaches. Use 1 drop of essential oils. Essential oils can also be diluted in olive oil for a similar effect. Like the garlic and onions, these mixtures will fight infection and reduce inflammation. While this isn’t a remedy you’re likely to have lying around the house, it’s a remedy I recommend for your herbal home medicine chest.

9. Hydrogen peroxide

All you do is pour some hydrogen peroxide in your ear! It’ll work instantly!!

10. Hot Herbal Tea

While you’re applying warmth from the outside, you can also apply warmth from the inside.  Echinacea, German chamomile, and holy basil are herbs that promote healing and relaxation.

Never use eardrops or oils inside the ear if a child has ear tubes or there is a chance of eardrum perforation. Please see your healthcare practitioner if pain is extreme or persists for several days. Earaches can be extremely painful, especially for the little ones. The best thing to do is take them to their healthcare provider. At home, make it relaxing for them, sounds of the night or calming waters playing on their little night light stand. When I was a child, I remember going on a camping trip with my family. When I came home, I had a horrible earache, probably the worse one I’ve ever had. I took antibiotics and Tylenol. Then one day, it just seemed to bother me even more. So my big brothers girlfriend, laid me down on her lap and would rub my ear and it was so soothing.

Then she took a baby Bulb Syringe, it’s used to clean their little noses. She took the syringe and sucked out all the build up and infection in my ear. As I was lying their, to be honest it felt so much better. But to our surprise she sucked out a cock roach. Yes, you heard that right. So always make certain your babies doctor checks the ear carefully and please feel free to use the syringe if your child seems to not get better. After that day I felt so much better. Since then I haven’t had an earache that bad. Thankfully!! I hope these home remedies help you and your little one. Please fell free to leave your own home remedies and questions. How To Get Rid Of Love Handles

handles

“Love handles” is a cute name for a serious problem: fatty deposits on the back and sides of the waist. They’re not just unsightly, they’re unhealthy, too. Fortunately, you can get rid of love handles once and for all by making some small changes to your lifestyle.

Lose Fat All Over

Love handles are a sign of excess abdominal fat. This is a stubborn and dangerous type of fat that can lead to metabolic disorders and even serious heart disease. Reducing the fat around your waistline can decrease your chance of becoming diabetic or suffering a heart attack.

If you’ve considered targeting your abdominal fat and nothing else, don’t bother; there’s no such thing as spot reduction. If there were, none of us would have problem areas and we would all be perfectly proportioned! But in reality, if you want to get rid of love handles, you have to get rid of fat everywhere else, too.

Cardio exercise will help you burn fat faster. Strength training will increase your lean muscle mass, which in turn will make you burn calories faster. Eating at a slight calorie deficit will keep you from storing extra calories as fat. The best way to get rid of love handles is to do all three.

Build Stronger Obliques

The obliques are the muscles that run down both sides of your abdomen. They frame the group of muscles commonly called the 6-pack. Obliques give us the strength to twist and turn when we need to. Unfortunately, they are sometimes hidden by love handles.

Building stronger obliques will help you burn more calories, and will give you tight abdominal muscles to show off after the love handles are gone.

You can get rid of love handles faster by doing exercises that were found by the American Council on Exercise to be the very best ones for working your obliques: Bicycle crunches, captain’s chair leg raises, and vertical leg crunches.

Bicycle crunches involve lying down on your back and doing crunch-twists while pedaling your legs as if you were riding a bicycle. Captain’s chair leg raises require the use of a captain’s chair, which is a common fixture in most gyms. Vertical leg crunches are performed like regular crunches, but with your legs raised perpendicular to the ground.

Eat Fat-Burning Foods

Some foods, especially those high in sugar and sodium, add inches to the waistline. To get rid of love handles, you’ll need to eat more foods that fight belly fat. Doctors recommend heart-healthy fats, like those found in olive oil, nuts, and salmon; 3 servings of calcium from green, leafy vegetables or dairy products; and plenty of fiber from fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

These foods are digested slowly, so they leave you feeling satisfied longer. Add some green tea to your diet for an extra fat-burning boost. Three cups a day will speed up your metabolism and ward off diseases.

Check Your Clothes

One last quick and dirty trick to get rid of love handles: Make sure your clothes fit properly. Tight clothing can create the illusion of love handles, even on thin folks. If you’ve worked hard to lose your love handles, don’t ruin the effect by squeezing into jeans that leave you overflowing!

How Alcohol Affects Weight Loss

We’ve all heard the cautionary tales about alcohol, weight loss, and how the two don’t mix.

As it turns out, this is good advice. There are some very sound reasons to avoid alcohol when you’re trying to lose weight. There are also plenty of healthier options for dieters who like a little drink now and then.

Here is a list of the reasons why alcohol can slow your weight loss and affect your weight.

Alcohol is high in empty calories.

Alcohol contains 7 calories per gram. By way of comparison, protein and carbohydrates contain 4 calories per gram, and fat contains 9 calories per gram.

The difference is that proteins, carbohydrates, and fats pack nutrition into their calories. Calories from alcohol do not provide nutrition, and will not satisfy your hunger. This makes it easy to keep drinking – and racking up a high calorie count.

Alcohol delays the fat-burning process.

According to Dr. Robert Atkins, the human body burns alcohol before any other fuel source. That means your body will burn off all the alcohol you’ve consumed before turning to its store of carbohydrates and fat. This can delay your weight-loss efforts, especially if you drink
frequently.

If you can’t bring yourself to abstain from alcohol, try sipping wine instead of beer or cocktails. Dr. Atkins considered the most diet-friendly drinks to be wine, hard liquor, or either of the above mixed with seltzer, tonic water, or diet soda.

Excessive alcohol consumption is linked to higher BMIs.

There is a direct correlation between the amount of alcoholic drinks a person consumes during a day, and that person’s Body Mass Index (BMI).

According to a study by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), study participants with the lowest BMIs drank three to seven times a week, but had only one drink during those days.

Participants with the highest BMIs drank alcohol less frequently, but consumed several drinks at a time.

As with any food, alcohol isn’t disastrous in small quantities. The real danger lies in overindulgence.

Alcohol ads are misleading.

The latest alcohol marketing campaigns refer to certain alcoholic beverages as “low-carb” or “zero-carb”. These campaigns are obviously targeting dieters, who have long avoided alcohol in their quest to shed pounds.

While it is technically true that straight liquors are distilled and therefore contain no carbs, they still contain plenty of calories and no nutritional value.

Beer and wine do contain carbohydrates, which can lead to cravings and bloating. Mixed drinks are the worst of the lot, as they contain all sorts of added sugar and calories.

Alcohol lowers inhibitions.

When we drink alcohol, our inhibitions go down. This can cause us to make decisions we would never consider while sober. When a dieter’s inhibitions are lowered, they may find it difficult to say no to overeating or eating rich foods that are high in calories.

Intoxicated dieters might be susceptible to friends’ urges to try “just one bite”, or their insistence that “just one time won’t hurt”. Mindless snacking is also common while drunk.

While the occasional planned splurge can actually help you stay on track to lose weight, alcohol can lead to an unplanned splurge followed by guilt and discouragement.

It’s up to you. The bottom line is that any diet boils down to how many calories you consume versus how many you burn.

In small quantities, alcohol can be an occasional part of your weight loss plan. Just tread carefully, save the harder drinks for special occasions, and factor the extra calories into your daily total.

Home Remedies for High Blood Pressure!

Take Charge and Control your Blood Pressure!

American Heart Association (AHA), research shows that high blood pressure (hypertension) affects more than 76 million American adults. High blood pressure is known as a “silent killer” since many people don’t have any visible symptoms and are subsequently unaware that they are affected by the condition. Blood pressure is the force or pressure in which blood pumps from the heart into the arteries. When blood pressure is high, the increased force of blood flow puts a strain on the arterial walls, causing them to become scarred and damaged. When blood pressure is left untreated, it can lead to many serious health complications, such as stroke, heart attack, kidney damage, and even vision loss. Regular visits to your healthcare provider can help you monitor and control your blood pressure. According to the AHA, a healthy blood pressure reading is less than 120/80 mmHg. A reading of 140/90 mmHg or above is considered high. If you’ve been diagnosed with high blood pressure, your doctor should work with you on how to lower it. This may include medication, lifestyle changes, or a combination of therapies. Taking these following steps can help bring your numbers down.

Get More Exercise!

Exercising 30 to 60 minutes a day can help bring down your blood pressure numbers by 4 to 9 mmHg. If you’ve been inactive for a while, talk to your doctor about a safe exercise routine. Be sure to start out slowly by walking or riding a bicycle. Gradually add moderate intensity activities to your routine. If your not a fan of the gym, take your workout outside. Go for a hike, jog, or swim and still reap the benefits. The important thing is to get moving and be active! The AHA also recommends incorporating at least two days of muscle strength training a week.

Slow Down on the Salts!

If you’ve got high blood pressure it’s vital to keep your sodium intake to a minimum. The AHA recommends limiting your sodium intake to less than 1,500 mg of sodium a day. That’s a little over half a teaspoon. One teaspoon of table salt has 2,400 mg of sodium! Table salt isn’t the only culprit when it comes to high sodium; processed food and many restaurant dishes tend to be loaded down with sodium. Consuming too much sodium can cause the body to retain fluid, resulting in a sharp rise in your blood pressure.

If you Smoke, Please try to Quit!

Research shows that smoking a cigarette can temporarily raise blood pressure 10 mmHg or more for up to an hour after you smoke. If you’re a heavy smoker, your blood pressure can stay elevated for extended periods of time. People with high blood pressure who smoke are at greater risk for developing dangerously high blood pressure. Even secondhand smoke can put you at increased risk for high blood pressure and heart disease.

Eat your Fruits and Vegetables!

Following the DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) can lower your blood pressure by as much as 14 mmHg. The DASH diet consists of eating fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, low-fat dairy, lean meats, and fish. Eliminate foods high in saturated fats, trans fats, and cholesterol, such as processed foods, whole milk dairy products, fatty meats, and fried food.

Control your Weight!

Weight and blood pressure go hand in hand. Losing just five pounds can help lower your blood pressure. It’s not just the number on your scale that matters, but the number of your waist size. The extra fat around your waist, called visceral fat, is troublesome because the fat tends to surround organs in the abdomen, which can lead to health issues including high blood pressure. Men should keep their waist measurement to less than 40 inches, while women should aim for less than 35 inches.

Limit your Alcohol intake!

Having a glass of red wine with your dinner is perfectly fine and may even offer heart health benefits when done in moderation. Drinking alcohol in excess can lead to many adverse health issues, including high blood pressure. What does drinking in moderation mean? The AHA recommends limiting alcoholic drinks to two per day for men and one per day for women.

Take a Breather and Relax!

In this hurried, multitasking society we live in, it’s hard to slow down and relax. It’s important to step away from your daily stress and take a few deep breaths, meditate, or practice yoga. Stress can temporarily raise your blood pressure, and too much of it can keep your pressure up for extended periods of time. Try to identify what’s triggering your stress, such as your job, relationships, or your finances, and find ways to fix the problems.
